Blasphemy: Bible Verses on Blasphemy

Blasphemy is an offense against God and is mentioned several times in the Bible. It is an insult to God or to the holy name of God, and is considered a serious sin in the eyes of God and an unforgivable offense.

Blasphemy is defined as speaking irreverently or contemptuously of God or of holy things. The Bible teaches that blaspheming against the Holy Spirit is an unforgivable sin, as it is an act of rejecting the Holy Spirit’s work of conviction and repentance. Blasphemy is also considered a crime in some countries, with punishments ranging from a fine to death.

  1. Leviticus 24:16 – “Whoever blasphemes the name of the Lord shall surely be put to death. All the congregation shall stone him. The sojourner as well as the native, when he blasphemes the Name, shall be put to death.” This verse from the book of Leviticus states that anyone who blasphemes the name of the Lord should be put to death.
  2. Matthew 12:31 – “Therefore I say to you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven men.” This verse from the book of Matthew explains that while most sins and blasphemies can be forgiven, blaspheming the Holy Spirit cannot.
  3. Mark 3:29 – “But he who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit never has forgiveness, but is subject to eternal condemnation.” This verse from the book of Mark reiterates that blaspheming the Holy Spirit is unforgivable and will lead to eternal condemnation.
  4. Luke 12:10 – “And anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man, it will be forgiven him; but to him who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit, it will not be forgiven.” This verse from the book of Luke explains that speaking against the Son of Man can be forgiven, but blaspheming the Holy Spirit cannot.

  6. 1 Timothy 1:13 – “Though I was formerly a blasphemer, a persecutor, and an insolent man; but I obtained mercy because I did it ignorantly in unbelief.” This verse from the book of 1 Timothy explains that even though Paul was a blasphemer, he was forgiven because he was ignorant of his actions.
  7. Hebrews 10:29 – “Of how much worse punishment, do you suppose, will he be thought worthy who has trampled the Son of God underfoot, counted the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified a common thing, and insulted the Spirit of grace?” This verse from the book of Hebrews warns against trampling on the Son of God, counting his blood as common, and insulting the Holy Spirit.
  8. James 2:7 – “Do not be deceived, my beloved brethren. Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning.” This verse from the book of James reminds us that all good gifts come from God and should not be blasphemed or insulted.
  9. 2 Peter 2:10 – “And especially those who walk according to the flesh in the lust of uncleanness and despise authority. They are presumptuous, self-willed. They are not afraid to speak evil of dignitaries.” This verse from the book of 2 Peter warns against speaking evil of those in authority, which can be considered a form of blasphemy.

Daniel 3:29 – “Therefore I make a decree that any people, nation, or language which speaks anything amiss against the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego shall be cut in pieces, and their houses shall be made an ash heap; because there is no other God who can deliver like this.” This verse from the book of Daniel explains that anyone who speaks against the true God will be punished.
