Why Does God Want Us to be Humble?

Titus 3:2 tells us that we need to show true humility to all men, and we know that this is what God wants us to do. When we are humble, God can work in our hearts, and bring out the best in us. People like to interact with those who are humble and don’t think they are more important than others.

I’m sure you have heard it said, “Humility is one of the greatest virtues.” What does that actually mean though? Why would God want us to be humble? Well, let me explain…

Humble people are really easy to love because they don’t exalt themselves or brag about their accomplishments. They are often very humble because they realize that everything good in their life is from God alone.

Humility goes hand-in-hand with biblical submission to authority or putting others first. If you humble yourself before men then God will lift you up (James:23). So true humility should come naturally as a follower of Christ who submits to the Lordship of Jesus.

According to Romans 12:3, we should not think of ourselves more highly than we ought to. This means that we need to see ourselves like every other human being because we are all important in God’s eyes.

Avoid selfish ambition

What Does God Say about Being Humble?

The Bible, which is God’s Word, has a lot to say about being humble. We will look at two verses and how they encourage us to walk with humility.

James 4:10 is one popular verse on humility. It says that we should humble ourselves in the sight of the Lord so that He will lift us up. If we want God to lift us out of situations that we find unpleasant, we have to give him room to do so. We ought to seek His wisdom because He is the one with the answers we want to deal with life’s issues.

According to Proverbs 22:4, we find riches, honor, and life by humility and the fear of the Lord. If we want to live godly lives that bring us joy, we have to humble ourselves and have the fear of God in our hearts. When we humble ourselves before God, He can direct us along the right path in life.

Why is It So Important to Be Humble?

It is important for us to be humble so that we can have the grace of God available to us daily. When we don’t humble ourselves, we leave no room for God in our lives, and the chances of us ending up on the wrong path are high. Those who are humble are teachable and willing to follow the right path in life. They can wait on God with patience, and follow His lead. God’s Word will show you how to be more humble.

What are 5 ways to Be Humble?

  1. Interact with people of all walks of life. Romans 12:16 tells us that we should not be too proud to enjoy the company of ordinary people. When God lifts us to positions of power and authority, we need to be humble enough to still view people of all walks of life as important.
  2. Humble yourself under God’s mighty hand (1 Peter 5:6). If we want God to lift us up when we are down, then we have to acknowledge His sovereignty, and submit to His will. We can humble ourselves when we want God to deliver us from our enemies or lift us from difficult circumstances.
  3. Be humble at all times. We should clothe ourselves with humility so that we can remain humble in all situations. Humility is something we can aim for everyday so that we will be more like Jesus. When we are humble, we can enjoy God’s favor (1 Peter 5:5).
  4. Correct others with humility (2 Timothy 2:25). It is easy to get caught up in being right when others make mistakes or oppose us. Instead of judging them, we can correct them with humility knowing that we are not perfect.
  5. Serve God in humility. As servants of God, we ought to serve others with humility. This means that we submit to authority, and care about the needs of others. We see that the apostle Paul served God with great humility as he went preaching the gospel to the gentiles (Acts 20:19).

Examples of Biblical Humility

The best example of humility in the Bible is that of Jesus Christ. He did not treat others with contempt or feel proud because He was the Son of God. He carried Himself with humility wherever He went. Philippians 2:5-7 tells us that we should have the same mindset that was in Christ Jesus. He was by nature God but did not consider equality with God to be something to use to His advantage. He took the nature of a servant while He was on earth.

Numbers 12:3 says that Moses was a very humble man, more than anyone else on the face of the earth. Moses was not always humble because he once killed an Egyptian who was torturing his fellow Hebrew. God worked in Moses’ heart until he became a humble man. Like Moses, we can allow God to work humility into our hearts.

The apostle Paul was a humble man. In 1 Corinthians 15:9, he says that he was the least of the apostles because he persecuted the church of God. We know that Paul was a great apostle, and yet he looked upon himself as less important than the other apostles. We can be like Paul and remain humble even when we have high positions in society.

Why Should Christians Strive for Humility

It is important for us as Christians to strive for humility so that we can allow God to be the Lord of our lives. We cannot live a righteous life without God, and we should acknowledge this daily. We need His grace and help each day, and we can only receive them when we are humble before Him.

– Jesus was humble (Philippians: “Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus”)

– God is humble and we should strive to follow his example (Proverbs 11:25; Proverbs 16:18, 20; Matthew 23:11)

– Believers will someday share in Christ’s humble position and reign (Romans: “He emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant…”)

– Christians should humble themselves to be exalted – we honor others so they will give glory to God (Matthew 23:12; Proverbs 15:33).

– Our humility allows us to make peace with others, and humble ourselves for peace with God (Proverbs 16:18)

– Humility is a quality that evokes respect from others.

– We humble ourselves to grow in humility – we can’t be humble unless we admit how low we are.

After reading about the benefits of practicing biblical humility, do you think humble Christians are more likely to be successful?
