What did Jesus say about Illness

What did Jesus say about Illness

In the Bible, Jesus’s teachings and actions regarding illness emphasize compassion, healing, and the power of faith. Here are some relevant Bible verses that showcase Jesus’s approach to illness:

  • Luke 8:43-44: A woman who had been suffering from a discharge of blood for twelve years, and could not be healed by anyone, touched the fringe of Jesus’s garment. Immediately, her discharge of blood ceased .
  • John 11:3-4: When Lazarus was ill, his sisters sent a message to Jesus saying, “Lord, he whom you love is ill.” Jesus responded, “This illness does not lead to death. It is for the glory of God, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it” .
  • Matthew 8:14-17: Jesus healed Peter’s mother-in-law who was sick with a fever. That evening, they brought to him many who were oppressed by demons, and he healed all who were sick. This fulfilled what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah: “He took our illnesses and bore our diseases” .

Three main takeaways from Jesus’s teachings and actions on illness are:

  1. Compassion and Healing: Jesus’s actions show a profound compassion for those who are ill. He often went out of his way to heal the sick, demonstrating God’s love and power through these acts of healing.
  2. Faith’s Power: Many of Jesus’s healings were connected to the faith of those being healed or those around them. This underscores the importance of faith in God’s power to heal and transform lives.
  3. Spiritual Significance: Jesus’s response to illness often had a spiritual significance, pointing to the glory of God and the fulfillment of scripture. Illness and healing were used by Jesus to reveal God’s power and to teach deeper spiritual truths about the kingdom of God.

These takeaways highlight the comprehensive approach Jesus had towards illness, incorporating compassion, faith, and a deeper spiritual message.
