What did Jesus say about Life after Death

What did Jesus say about Life after Death

Jesus’ teachings on life after death emphasize the eternal nature of the soul and the reality of judgement and resurrection. His teachings are woven throughout the New Testament, offering both hope and warning.

  1. John 5:24-29 describes the promise of eternal life for those who hear and believe in Jesus, contrasting it with the resurrection of judgement for those who have done evil. Jesus states, “Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life” .
  2. Revelation 20:12-15 portrays the final judgement, where the dead are judged according to their deeds, as recorded in the books, including the Book of Life. This passage starkly illustrates the second death in the lake of fire for those not found in the Book of Life .
  3. Romans 6:4-5 speaks to the believer’s union with Christ in His death and resurrection, highlighting the transformative power of this union: “We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life” .

Three main takeaways from these verses are:

  1. Eternal Life Through Belief: The core of Jesus’ teaching on life after death is the offer of eternal life to those who hear His word and believe in God who sent Him. This belief is not merely intellectual assent but involves a transformation of the heart and life that aligns with God’s will.
  2. Judgement According to Deeds: Jesus warns of a final judgement where individuals are held accountable for their actions. This judgement determines one’s eternal destiny, reinforcing the seriousness with which we must live our lives in light of eternal realities.
  3. Union with Christ: Believers are united with Christ in His death and resurrection, signifying a break from the power of sin and a new life lived under the grace of God. This union assures us of our participation in the resurrection to eternal life, mirroring Christ’s victory over death.
