  1. Jesus taught that forgiveness should be unconditional. In the parable of the unmerciful servant (Matthew 18:21-35), Jesus showed that we must forgive those who have wronged us without demanding repayment.
  2. Forgiveness is a choice. In Ephesians 4:32, Paul instructs us to “be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.” We must choose to forgive, even when it is difficult.
  3. God desires us to forgive others. In Matthew 6:14-15, Jesus tells us, “For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.”
  4. forgiveness is not a sign of weakness. In Colossians 3:13, Paul says, “Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.”
  5. Forgiveness is a sign of strength. In 2 Corinthians 2:7, Paul writes, “Now instead, you ought to forgive and comfort him, so that he will not be overwhelmed by excessive sorrow.”
  6. Forgiveness is an act of obedience. In Luke 17:3-4, Jesus says, “If your brother sins, rebuke him, and if he repents, forgive him. And if he sins against you seven times in a day, and seven times comes back to you and says, ‘I repent,’ you must forgive him.”
  7. Forgiveness is not forgetting. In Luke 23:34, Jesus says, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” Jesus did not forget the wrongs done to him, but he chose to forgive them.
  8. Forgiveness is an act of humility. In James 4:10, the author writes, “Humble yourselves before the Lord and he will lift you up.” When we choose to forgive, we demonstrate humility and obedience.
  9. Forgiveness does not mean approval. In Matthew 18:15-17, Jesus tells us, “If your brother or sister sins, go and point out their fault, just between the two of you. If they listen to you, you have won them over. But if they will not listen, take one or two others along, so that ‘every matter may be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses.’”
  10. Forgiveness is necessary for God’s forgiveness. In Matthew 6:14-15, Jesus says, “For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.”
  11. Forgiveness leads to peace. In Colossians 3:15, Paul instructs us to “let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace.”
  12. Forgiveness requires self-control. In 2 Corinthians 10:5, Paul writes, “We take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.” We must exercise self-control to make the choice to forgive.
  13. Forgiveness is an act of love. In 1 John 4:7-8, the author writes, “Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.”
